What is the PRAISE-U project?

PRAISE-U brings together experts from across Europe who are working together to find better ways to detect prostate cancer. The project is split into different parts:

1. Understanding what is happening across Europe in terms of early detection and screening of prostate cancer.
2. Developing a risk-based prostate cancer screening method which can be used in different countries across Europe.
3. Running 12-month projects to test different screening methods in 5 locations across Europe: Ireland, Spain (Manresa and Galicia), Lithuania and Poland.
4. Evaluating the outcomes of all the projects.

Early detection through screening

It is important to detect and treat cancer early before symptoms develop. All population screening programmes have both benefits and harms. For prostate cancer, experts looked at the benefits versus the harms of screening. Their suggestion now is for countries in the EU to do more research to determine whether a screening programme should be established in each country. PRAISE-U will provide very important information for such a decision.
