About prostate cancer

The prostate is a small gland that forms part of a man’s reproductive system. It is about the size of a golf ball and surrounds the tube, called the urethra, that empties urine from the bladder. The prostate makes a thick white fluid that mixes with sperm from your testicles. It also produces a protein called prostate- specific antigen or PSA, which leaks into the bloodstream in small amounts.Prostate cancer is when cancer cells form a tumour inside the prostate. It is the most common type of cancer in men but is often treatable and has a high survival rate. Some prostate cancers grow slowly and never cause symptoms in a man’s lifetime, but others may endanger men’s health if not detected and treated.

Early detection through screening

It is important to detect and treat cancer early before symptoms develop. All population screening programmes have both benefits and harms. For prostate cancer, experts looked at the benefits versus the harms of screening. Their suggestion now is for countries in the EU to do more research to determine whether a screening programme should be established in each country.
